Innovation Challenge (Track 2 -Afrohackathon)

Accra, Ghana – June 23, 2026

Are you a student, researcher, innovator, engineer, or entrepreneur passionate about Africa’s energy future?

The Afro-Hackathon Track is a specialized innovation platform dedicated to advancing lithium-ion battery technology, value addition, and industrial development across Africa. The initiative harnesses the expertise of African universities, research institutions, and innovation hubs to develop homegrown solutions that support the continent’s energy transition and mineral beneficiation agenda.

 

Participants will have the opportunity to develop and showcase innovative ideas in areas including:

 1. Lithium-ion battery design and engineering
 2. Battery applications for mobility, energy storage, and off-grid systems
3.  Re-engineering and adaptation of existing technologies
4.  Battery value chain development
5. Circularity, recycling, and lifecycle management

African nationals aged 15 to 35, whether living on the continent or abroad, can apply at any stage from a working model to a pilot-tested concept.

The Afro-Hackathon Track, focuses on lithium-ion battery design, applications, and value chain development, with support from partners like AUDA-NEPAD, AMDC, Africa Change Lab, and UNDP.
 
There will be a multi-stage selection process, including application review, virtual interviews, and an Innovathon that includes a case series. The process ends with a Final Pitch Event at FEC 2026 in Accra, Ghana, on August 25 and 26, 2026.
 
Winners will receive more than just recognition. Finalists will present their ideas to over 1,000 policymakers, investors, and industry leaders. They will also have access to cash prizes, mentorship, and incubation support through ACEP’s Climate Innovation Hub, while keeping full intellectual property rights over their innovations.
