Methane abatement in the oil and gas sector is widely recognised as one of the fastest and most cost-effective climate mitigation opportunities available today. Reducing methane emissions offers a dual benefit: limiting climate impacts while capturing a valuable resource that would otherwise be wasted. From an energy systems perspective, methane losses reflect a clear failure of energy productivity, signalling inefficiencies in upstream and midstream operations where commercially viable gas is produced but never reaches end users. In gas-producing African countries, such losses translate into foregone power generation, reduced domestic gas availability, and weakened energy security at a time of rapidly growing electricity demand. A significant share of methane emissions in the sector arises from avoidable sources, including flaring, venting, and fugitive emissions from ageing or poorly maintained infrastructure. Effective methane management can therefore unlock additional energy supply, generate new revenue streams, and deliver meaningful health benefits for surrounding communities.
